THE BOAT SCHOOL IN EASTPORT IS NOW RECRUITING STUDENTS FOR FALL SEMESTER
“Maine Residents Qualify For $5000 In Free Education Money From Maine’s NSAI” - John Miller
The Boat School in Eastport, America’s oldest boat building school has started recruiting students for fall semester. Incoming students will start classes in September, ’08.
“Maine’s boat building and marine trades industry offers great career opportunities,” says Boat School administrator John Miller. “We can fast track people into a great job with great pay and benefits. Add to that… the fact that Maine residents qualify to apply for $5000 in free money from Maine’s North Star Alliance Initiative Education Awards for marine trades training… and you have an incredible opportunity to get broad based training without lots of debt service and a fun career that keeps you right here in Maine,” says Miller
Maine’s North Star Alliance Initiative is made possible through funding received from the U.S. Department of Labor Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Initiative.
The Boat School - Husson offers one and two year certificate and diploma programs in Wood Construction, Marine Systems, Composite & Fiberglass Construction, Marine Painting and Marine Mechanical Systems.
Husson College is the largest private educator of Maine students and offers certificates, associates, bachelors, masters and doctoral programs at various locations across the state.
Boat building classes are conducted in a well-equipped waterfront campus at Deep Cove, in Eastport, Maine. Through a combination of technical instruction and practical hands-on boat building experience, students acquire an understanding of the principles of boat design, drafting, marine systems, marine painting, mechanical systems, and composites. They also develop the skills for lofting, building wood and fiberglass boats, as well as maintaining and restoration of boats. With tuition at only $8000.00 a year for both Maine and New Brunswick students, The Boat School in Eastport is the regions most comprehensive and affordable boatbuilding program. The tuition includes a thousand dollars worth of tools that are the students to keep after completion of their program.
“This is a hands-on school for professional boatbuilders and mechanics. Graduates have gained a national reputation for excellence,” says David G. Brown, author of Boatbuilding with Baltek Durakore
Upon completion of the boat building program, graduates will be qualified for the following positions: Boatbuilding (wood & composite), Marine joiner, Mold Maker, Lofting technician, Marina Technician, Composite Technician, Hull Surveyor Assistant, Systems Installer, Job Estimator, Boat Repairer, Shipwright, Service manager, Yard manager, Travel lift Operator, Cabinetry Technician, Fiberglass Boat Repairer, Marine Painter and Marine Mechanical Systems Technician.
The Boat Building Industry in Maine is vibrant and growing. The first ship in America was built in Maine over 400 years ago. Four centuries later, the industry offers more quality jobs then there are people to fill them. These are careers with benefits and long term stability. Today there is a shortage of qualified applicants for jobs in boat repair and construction facilities the full length of the Maine Coast. In addition Maine trained boat builders are highly sought after by boat building operations on the entire East Coast of the United States. Maine’s boat building industry is robust as the State’s third largest industry, employing over 2,500 workers with annual sales over $355 million and a payroll of $95 million.

The Boat Building Industry in Maine is vibrant and growing. It has been around for a very long time. For thousands of years the Passamaquoddy People that call Eastport home have been building vessels on our shores to travel over the waters. European settlers built the first ship in America here in Maine over 400 years ago. Four centuries later, the industry reports that there are more quality jobs then there are people to fill them. These are careers with benefits and long term stability. According to industry officials, there is a shortage of qualified applicants for careers in boat repair and construction facilities the full length of the Maine Coast. In addition, Maine trained boat builders are highly sought after by boat building operations on the entire East Coast of the United States.
“Historically, many of our graduates are recruited by boatbuilding firms before graduation,” says Boat School administrator John Miller.

Maine’s Marine Technology Center and The Boat School At Eastport Are On The Move
Ocean Renewable Power Company, LLC (ORPC) was founded in 2004 for the purpose of generating reliable, competitive, emission-free electricity from the virtually unlimited energy resources of the oceans. ORPC is assessing the development of tidal current projects at sites in the upper Cook Inlet adjacent to Anchorage, AK, in Resurrection Bay adjacent to Seward, AK and in the Western Passage adjacent to Eastport, ME.
ORPC-Maine plans to begin building and installing a full-scale prototype OCGen module in the Western Passage adjacent to Eastport, Maine, in 2008 and, upon successful testing and monitoring, develop, permit and build commercial-scale OCGen projects at the sites. The system that ORPC is proposing is a two-ducted turbine generator that would capture energy from the current regardless of the flow direction and a single underwater transmission line to the shore.
Assembly of the module will take place at Maine’s Marine Technology Center, home of The Boat School, in Eastport beginning this fall. ORPC-Maine will be working with The Boat School, The City of Eastport and The Eastport Port Authority.
“As The Boat School moves forward in this new chapter of its history it is very exciting to see ORPC joining us here on our campus,” says instructor Dean Pike.

WE ARE ON OUR WAY!!!
Augusta - the bill to turn over the Boat school came out of committee with a "unanimous ought to pass". This clears the way for the City and the Friends to seek funds for a transition period before Husson takes over all operations. For the next two years Husson will be offering the entire program on the Eastport campus but the City and the Friends will assist during this time. The Friends will continue support for as long as we are needed.

The Boat School is entering a wonderful new stage
in its development. Since its founding in 1969, it has been administered
as a campus of what is now known as the Maine Community
College System. It
has been based at a large and extremely well equipped campus in Eastport, Maine
provided to the state through the City of Eastport. In recent years there
has been concern in the Community College System, in Eastport, and in the marine
industry in Maine that the State's resources were being stretched too thin to
allow for the expansion of this program to fill the needs of the marine
industry. With the thoughtful assistance of many in the Maine higher
educational system, state and local government, the marine industry, and private
individuals it has been decided that the best route to expansion is to return
ownership of the property to the City of Eastport and transition over the 2007
and 2008 academic year to administration by Husson College, a highly respected
private institution oriented toward professional education. Husson is
making a major commitment both here in Eastport and at a new campus in Calais to
greatly increase educational opportunities in this area for the benefit of
Maine, New England, and the Maritime Provinces. These campuses are
centrally located for this region.
The courses listed on this site will be offered by Husson for the fall of
2007 and spring of 2008. Graduates of this curriculum will receive a
boatbuilding technology certificate and a composite certificate. All
credits will be transferable to associate's and bachelor's degrees at Husson
College, if so desired.
Tuition, fees, and tools will be $8,000 for students from in state and from the province of New Brunswick. Out of state students from the rest of New England will pay $12,500. All tools provided to students will become the student's own tool kit upon graduation.
During this one year transition period current first year students currently registered with the Community College System will be able to complete their second year thru the Community College at $78 per credit hour plus fees. This is the last time courses will be offered through the Community College.
You can meet instructors, students, and supporters, along with representatives of Husson College at The Boat School's booth, at the Maine Boatbuilder's Show in Portland, Maine from Friday March 16th, through the 17th & 18th. This well loved show is presented every year at this time by Portland Yacht Services.

Scholarship Awarded
In a co-operative effort with the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship, the Boat School announced that first year boatbuilding student, Cameron Frothingham, will be the recipient of the first scholarship to attend the Rockport based furniture school.
Director of the Furniture School, Peter Korn, has been working with Boat School instructor Dean Pike and together they hope this will be a yearly scholarship. It is awarded to a freshmen student that wants to get into the field boat furniture and custom wood interior. There is also the possibility that graduates of the Rockport program may want to attend certain aspects of the Boat School program.
